What does Carl see? (2020)

This is a video essay that focuses on the commodification and subsequent consumption of racialized subjects in video games. Working with discussions surrounding issues in digital gaming, this video has several questions in mind. Firstly, how do digital manifestations of the racialized other, classified and created in white-dominated spaces, become a source of pleasure and consumption for the “ideal” gamer? Secondly, how is this pleasure and entertainment coded through varying acts of gameplay? In order to answer these questions, I used the critically acclaimed open-world game, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Through machinima, I wanted to identify and present how hegemonic ideas of race, specifically black bodies and culture, are perpetuated in both the creation and consumption of the game.
